Kanji → Rōmaji converter — Hepburn / Kunrei-shiki / macron
Convert Japanese text to Hepburn romaji using kuromoji morphological analysis. Switch between full romaji and a ruby view, and choose macron long vowels (ō, ū) or literal doubled vowels (ou, uu). The dictionary downloads once and is then offline. Runs entirely in your browser.
How to use
Paste Japanese text, pick a mode (full romaji or ruby) and a long-vowel style (macron ō / ū or literal ou / uu), then click Convert. kuromoji performs morphological analysis and converts to Hepburn romaji. The dictionary downloads once and is then offline. The Sample button loads example text.
FAQ
- Is text uploaded?
- No. kuromoji and its dictionary run in your browser; nothing leaves your device.
- Macron or literal long vowels?
- Use macron (ō / ū) for passport-style or canonical romanization; use literal (ou / uu) for ASCII-only contexts like URLs / domains.
- Are proper nouns and names correct?
- It depends on the dictionary. Common place names usually work; unusual personal names may be misread.
- Kunrei / Nihon-shiki support?
- Only Hepburn (passport-style) at the moment.
