FAQ
- Where does the data come from?
- Static data based on JIS X 0401 (prefecture codes) and ISO 3166-2:JP, bundled into the tool. No external API.
- Is Tokyo's capital "Tokyo" or "Shinjuku"?
- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government building is in Shinjuku, so we list "Shinjuku" as the capital. Some textbooks use "Tokyo" for convenience.
- Which romanisation scheme?
- Modified Hepburn without macrons (Tokyo / Osaka / Kyoto / Hokkaido) — the standard form used in passports and English addresses.
- How many regions?
- Eight: Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu (incl. Koshinetsu / Hokuriku / Tokai), Kinki, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu-Okinawa (including Okinawa Prefecture).
- How does the search work?
- Partial match against all 7 fields (code, ISO, kanji, hiragana, romaji, capital city in kanji / hiragana / romaji), case-insensitive with NFKC normalisation. Try "gifu", "Gifu", "21", "JP-21", or 岐阜 — they all hit the same row.

Click to copy; component variants (心→忄, 水→氵, 艸→艹) are noted under each radical. Runs entirely in your browser.
