Tip calculator — restaurant tip + bill split
Enter the bill, tip percentage, and party size to compute per-person tip, per-person total, and grand total. Country-aware presets (US 18-20%, Canada 15-20%, Europe 5-10%, Japan 0%) save you the lookup, and a round-up toggle covers the awkward cents. Perfect for travel, business dinners, guided activities, or splitting a taxi fare. Runs locally in your browser.
How to use
Enter the bill amount. In the US it's common to compute tip on the post-tax total; many European receipts already include service. Pick a country preset (US 18-20%, Canada 15-20%, Europe 5-10%, Japan 0%) or switch to Custom to enter any %. Set the party size to split the bill. Turn on 'Round each person up' to clean up the cents (USD = $1, JPY = ¥100). It costs a tiny bit more but makes cash settlement easier.
FAQ
- Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?
- Technically pre-tax is the original convention in most US states, but receipts usually only show the post-tax total — most diners just apply the % to the post-tax number. This tool multiplies whatever you enter, so feed in the pre-tax amount if you want pre-tax tipping.
- Where do the presets come from?
- Industry conventions: US restaurants typically expect 18-20% (default 20%), Canada 15-20%, Europe 5-10% (often service charge already included), Japan 0% (no tipping culture). Adjust to local norms.
- What's the round-up step?
- Per currency: USD / EUR / CAD / GBP round to the next integer; JPY to the next ¥100. If you're paying with a card or e-money split, leave the toggle OFF.
- Does this assume cash tipping?
- Either works. In the US / Canada you can write the amount in the tip line on a card receipt. For cash, leave the difference on the table or hand it to the server.
- Is anything uploaded?
- No. All calculation runs inside your browser.
